El Salvador's Embrace of Bitcoin as National Currency Met with Skepticism


Bitcoin will become El Salvador’s national currency on Sept. 7. As President Nayib Bukele’s administration puts all the infrastructure in place, many citizens question the move, feeling left out of the adoption process. Massive protests have erupted throughout the country in response. The government said Bitcoin use would be “totally optional.” The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned adopting crypto assets as national currency would be “a step too far.”
